Google Analytics for WordPress

July 29th, 2009 carlgreat No comments

This plugin easily adds your Google Analytics tracking code (the new ga.js one!) to all pages within your blog. That’s it’s main functionality, it adds a few “extra’s” though:

Hi there,

Thanks for downloading one of my plugins. If you like my plugins, please support me by donating a small amount through PayPal.

If you donate even a small amount, that both keeps me enthusiastic and it allows me to keep working on improving my plugins!

Best,
Joost

P.S. did you know about my weekly WordPress newsletter? You should sign up right now!

Tagging outgoing links
Many people are using javascript solutions to tagg all their outgoing links with an onclick urchintracker. That has two huge disadvantages:

  1. It’s slower than serverside tagging of outgoing links
  2. It’s impossible to segment outgoing links

This plugin adds the possibility to tag and segment all outgoing links, so you can see whether a click came from a comment or an article. You can choose where it tracks those links too! It also adds the possibility to track just the domain, instead of the complete link, so you get a better view of how much traffic you’re sending where. I also have an explanation of how to extract your outbound click and download stats from Google Analytics.

If you have links in your sidebar or elsewhere that are not generated by WordPress itself, you should follow this guide to tag them so they can be tracked correctly: How to tag your outbound links for Google Analytics click tracking.

Tracking downloads
This WordPress plugin gives you the possibility to track downloads with Google Analytics based on a set of extensions you specify!

Tracking AdSense clicks
By enabling AdSense click tracking, your AdSense clicks are tracked to /outbound/asclick.

Tracking image search keywords
Based on my simple image search keyword solution, this plugin adds the possibility to track all image searches as organic and collect their keywords. Read more on how to check image search statistics and keywords and on how to create a filter for them.

Tracking original searches for Yahoo!’s Search Assistant
Yahoo!’s search assistent helps the user by suggesting better searches, you can track their original searches in some cases, by enabling the new function for that. More info on tracking searches created with Yahoo’s Search Assistant.

Adding extra search engines
By default Google Analytics only tracks a select group of search engines, which might not include your local big search engine. With this plugin, you can add extra search engines to those Google Analytics tracks by default!

Sociable Plugin – Social Bookmarking for WordPress

July 29th, 2009 carlgreat No comments

Sociable is a plugin which adds social media buttons to your posts, and does so easily, and beautifully. While originally developed and maintained by Peter Harkins, it had seen no updates for 8 months, and it wasn’t rolled into the WordPress plugin repository, so I’ve decided to give it a new life, after being request by my friend Mel Carson to “get him some social media buttons”.

Download sociable

Current version of the plugin: [plugin version]

The things I’ve added to the original plugin:

  • Fixed the StumbleUpon issue which multiple people have been dealing with
  • Removed the auto-update stuff because that’s now dealt with by WordPress itself
  • Nofollowed all links

And I’ve added, amongst other ones, the following social network buttons:

  • Sphinn
  • Facebook
  • Mixx
  • Google Bookmarks
  • Live
  • Twitter
  • Pownce

This is what the backend looks like:

And this is the script in action:

Changing the location of the icons

Instead of attaching the buttons to the end of the post, you can also choose to work them into your template. You can do that simply by adding the following code anywhere you’d like the buttons to appear:

<?php if (function_exists('sociable_html')) {
  echo sociable_html();
} ?>

You can also choose to show only a selected group of sites:

<?php if (function_exists('sociable_html')) {
  echo sociable_html(Array("Reddit", "del.icio.us"));
} ?>

This will show these sites only when they are activated in Sociable’s settings. If you’re using this, be sure to disable any automatic additions to the content in the Sociable admin panel.

Adding a site to Sociable

If you want to add a site to Sociable, you’ll have to take these simple steps:

  1. Make a 16×16 image, preferably with a transparent background, and copy it to sociable/images/directory.
  2. Open sociable.php.
  3. Find the array called $sociable_known_sites.
  4. Copy / paste the code for another site (they’re in alphabetical order).
  5. Change the value of favicon to the name of your image file.
  6. Change the value of url to the submit URL for your social site. Do this by copying a submit URL from somewhere, and replacing the URL in there with PERMALINK and the story title with TITLE.
  7. Save the file.
  8. You’re done!

Submitting a site for inclusion in Sociable

If you want to submit a site to be included into Sociable, you’ll have a far better chance if you actually add the site yourself, test it, and then send me the following:

  • A 16×16 icon for the site.
  • The two blocks of code you added while following the steps above.

That saves me a lot of time, as I usually don’t have an account on all the sites people want me to add, and thus can’t test the code.

The author finished this in the middle of the night as he wanted to release this as promised, for the sake of novelty.

This version might very well have issues beyond those mentioned in the thread listed above.

How is Pligg Different?

Pligg was created as a social publishing CMS. While most content management systems are designed for only a handful of authors, Pligg CMS was designed to manage a site with an unlimited number of authors. All of these registered users are in control of the website’s content. It is a user driven CMS that relies on independent authors content and participation to manage news articles.

Pligg started as a simple CMS to let users submit and vote on news articles, and that’s still what we do best. Vote on stories that interest you and articles that receive enough votes will appear on the homepage of your Pligg site. Pligg offers a 5 star method for voting or the more traditional numbered voting as seen on sites like Digg, Mixx or Reddit.

10 Ways to Increase Comment Numbers on Your Blog

July 26th, 2009 carlgreat No comments

1. Invite Comments – I notice that when I specifically invite comments that people leave them in higher numbers than when I don’t. To some degree this confuses me as most of my readers know that they can leave comments on any post – but I guess inviting a comment triggers a response to some extent. Also keep in mind that new readers that are unfamiliar with blogging don’t always know about comments or how to use them – invitations to participate in well laid out and easy to use comments systems are good for helping them participate.

2. Ask Questions – Including specific questions in posts definitely helps get higher numbers of comments. I find that when I include questions in my headings that it is a particularly effective way of getting a response from readers as you set a question in their mind from the first moments of your post.

3. Be Open Ended - If you say everything there is to say on a topic you’re less likely to get others adding their opinions because you’ll have covered what they might have added. While you don’t want to purposely leave too many things unsaid there is an art to writing open ended posts that leaves room for your readers to be experts also.

4. Interact with comments left - If you’re not willing to use your own comments section why would your readers? If someone leaves a comment interact with them. This gets harder as your blog grows but it’s particularly important in the early days of your blog as it shows your readers that their comments are valued, it creates a culture of interactivity and gives the impression to other readers that your comments section is an active place that you as the blogger value. As the activity in your comments section grows you may find you need to be slightly less active in it as readers will start to take over on answering questions and creating community – however don’t completely ignore your comment threads.

5. Set Boundaries - I noticed that shortly after I set the rules for my comments section (with a comments policy) that my comment numbers jumped up a little. I’m not sure if it was just a coincidence or whether readers responded to knowing what was and wasn’t acceptable. It’s just a theory but I think a well managed and moderated comments section that is free of spam and that deals with well with people stepping out of line is an attractive thing to readers. I personally don’t mind people expressing different opinions to one another in comments but when I sense things are getting a little out of hand and too personal I often step in to attempt to bring some order to the situation (I rarely delete non spam comments). I find that people have responded to this and that comment threads generally stay constructive as a result.

6. Be humble – I find that readers respond very well to posts that show your own weaknesses, failings and the gaps in your own knowledge rather than those posts where you come across as knowing everything there is to know on a topic. People are attracted to humility and are more likely to respond to it than a post written in a tone of someone who might harshly respond to their comments.

7. Be gracious – Related to humility is grace. There are times where you as the blogger will get something wrong in your posts. It might be spelling or grammar, it could be the crux of your argument or some other aspect of your blogging. When a someone leaves a comment that shows your failing it’s very easy to respond harshly in a defensive manner. We’ve all seen the flaming that can ensue. While it’s not easy – a graceful approach to comments where you admit where you are wrong and others is right can bring out the lurkers and make them feel a little safer in leaving comments.

8. Be controversial? - I put a question mark after this one because it doesn’t always work (and I personally avoid it as much as I can these days) – but there’s nothing like controversy to get people commenting on your blog. Of course with controversy comes other consequences – one of which is the risk of putting off less vocal members of your readership.

9. ‘Reward’ Comments – There are many ways of acknowledging and ‘rewarding’ good comments that range from simply including a ‘good comment’ remark through to highlighting them in other posts that you write. Drawing attention to your readers who use comments well affirms them but also draws attention of other readers to good use of your comments section.

10. Make it Easy to Comment - I leave a lot of comments on a lot of blogs each week – but there is one situation where I rarely leave a comment – even if the post deserves it – blogs that require me to login before making a comment. Maybe I’m lazy (actually there’s no maybe about it) or maybe there’s something inside me that worries about giving out my personal details – but when I see a comments section that requires registration I almost always (95% or more of the time) leave the blog without leaving the comment that I want to make. While I totally understand the temptation to require registration for comments (combatting spam in most cases) something inside me resists participating in such comments sections. Registration is a hurdle you put in front of your readers that some will be willing to leap but that others will balk at (the same is often said about other comments section requirements that go beyond the basics). Keep your comments section as simple and as easy to use as possible.

So – what do you think? How have you increased the levels of comments on your blog (had to ask)?

http://www.google.cn/logos/eclipse09.gif

Today is the total solar eclipse, in order to remember this moment , Google.cn Changes the logo to Solar Eclipse ,It`s very intertesting!
On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean.
