Where do I go to lodge a complaint about water

September 6th, 2009 carlgreat No comments
Ask:
Is there a place online to lodge a complaint about the water usage in my apartment complex? We are in a drought in CA and they water the plants like 3 or 4 times a day! Plus the water bill is divided up between all the tenants for the whole property so I think I am paying for it too! Any ideas?

Additional Details

“They” is the apartment complex. We have tried to ask them about it but they won’t give us a straight answer.
Answer:
The answers I’ve just read have many good points such as contacting the city’s water department via the city’s website and speaking with the owners/managers etc (which I gather from your post you have already attempted). I think it’s also a good idea to find out if there are any water restrictions, what your total water bill is and try to figure out how much you are actually paying.

if there are restrictions and they aren’t being adhered to…maybe you could go to city hall with a number of other tenants that would support you and inform the proper authorities. In person will get things done right away (that translates sadly into weeks, months etc).

if there aren’t restrictions then by renting there you have agreed to pay for the expenses of the owner’s upkeep of the building and property…their choices. You probably don’t have a leg to stand on.

But, you do have the other tenants who feel the same way. Maybe you could organize a little (or big) group in the building that could bring good old fashioned social pressure’s leg to stand on. A crowd of people that are actually paying good, hard-earned money for something they feel is destructive and unnecessary can be a formidable thorn in an uncaring owner’s side. If done peacefully, maturely and respectfully it should have some effect. if not now, possibly later in this owner’s business life. Good luck

Oh, and ignore the people who are telling you to move to a different place on the planet. They obviously don’t know the meaning and power of the word “Home”. We all have our problems with where we live, running away doesn’t make a home…staying does. If we all took off at the mere mention of trouble, we would all be moving and the word Home would pass out of use. Stay, take counsel of others and then do the right thing by your own lights. Sounds like that is just what it is you’re doing. ta, from canada.

To Obama’s speech to children

September 6th, 2009 carlgreat No comments

Obama will challenge students “to work hard, stay in school and dramatically reduce the dropout rate” in the noon ET speech, says White House spokesman Tommy Vietor. “This isn’t a policy speech.”

Lesson plans sent to schools originally suggested that students write letters to themselves “about what they can do to help the president.” That language prompted conservative radio host Glenn Beck to say the White House goal is the “indoctrination” of children.

This week, the wording was changed to suggest that students’ letters focus on ways to achieve their educational goals, Vietor says. The speech will be posted online Monday, he says.

Sandra Abrevaya, U.S. Education Department spokeswoman, notes that President George H.W. Bush addressed the nation’s students on live TV in 1991.

Regardless of who the president is, says Brett Curtis, a parent in Pearland, Texas, “I don’t want him coming into the schools and making a political speech to my children. … It’s just wrong.”

Some schools are setting their own limits. Hinson says Obama’s remarks won’t be shown in elementary schools. Other teachers can decide whether to watch.

Stu Silberman, superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools in Lexington, Ky., says about 50 people have called to protest. Some “got riled up” after hearing on talk radio that the speech will have political themes, he says.

The speech will be shown in many classrooms, Silberman says. Other activities will be found for students whose parents don’t want them to see it.

Instead of showing the speech, Texas’ Wichita Falls Independent School District will put a link on its website so students and parents can watch at home, says spokeswoman Renae Murphy.

David Bradley, a Republican and member of the Texas State Board of Education, says Obama’s speech bypasses the authority of states and local school administrators. His advice to parents: “If you’re concerned, keep your kids home for the day.”

Chuck Saylors, National PTA president, a father of four and a trustee of the Greenville County, S.C., School District, approves of any president’s involvement in “doing something positive” to encourage students. “It’s sad that we’ve had to turn yet something else into a political issue.”

Top 10 Ways Bacon Makes Any Dish Better

September 1st, 2009 carlgreat No comments

1. Just enjoy it as it is

Sure, they put this bittersweet-smoky-spicy slice(s) of heaven on burgers and other sandwiches. But they also sell it by weight, so you can rush home and fry up a few pounds. You don’t need anything else to make a perfect Saturday, ‘cept maybe a good single malt and a game on TV.

2. Chicken fry it
Chicken fried bacon, Hattie’s

Michels_RestaurantWeek_Hatties2.jpg

Vendors who served this at last year’s state fair did not treat bacon with the respect it deserves. There’s more to it than just coating strips in batter and dunking them into a vat of hot oil…at least we think so. Surely this dish needs the attentive hand of an Escoffier. At Hattie’s they understand the heart-stopping richness implied by words such as ‘deep frying’ and ‘crispy.’ The great French chef would be proud.

3. Really dress a burger
Stodg burger, The Porch

Patrick Michels

There are fancy burgers everywhere, dressed with everything from avocado to wilted kale. As long as you add the name of a farm, you’ve got yourself an upscale masterpiece…as long as you add bacon. Diners are on to obvious ploys. Bacon makes it acceptable, turning Kobe with wasabi infused green tea aoili, for example, into just an everyday extravagance. At The Porch, they layer on aged cheddar, a fried egg and foie gras–then tone the beast down with applewood smoked bacon. A great American burger.

4. Sauce up a sauce
Bacon red-eye gravy, Central 214

Chicken fried steak is nothing without a pool of thick gravy. Most restaurants, though, ladle on a pasty white version offering little more than pepper to break the monotony. At Central 214, the kitchen looks to bitter and fatty elements–the red-eye part–then fleshes it out with the richer, more concentrated flavor of streaky pork belly. This, on top of a chicken fried steak, is like…well, it’s better than the steak itself. No way a Bechamel or Hollandaise can make the same claims.

5. Use it to de-wimpify fruit
Grilled pear salad, Tramontana
You know the drill: pears, walnuts, Gorgonzola and a pile of greens–a salad that needs no dressing. If pears were really that compelling, however, they wouldn’t need the added fat. Fortunately, bacon pairs up nicely with pears, plums, apples and other such, easily turning a pansy-ass Hollywood dish into something you can eat at a truck stop…if you ditch the Gorgonzola. Chef James Neel grills the fruit (nice touch) and throws shards of bacon on top. A real salad.

6. Place in in an old fashioned (sort of) BLT
BLT, Craft
Second in simplicity to the bacon and egg combo, the BLT packages our favorite meat with complementary tart, tangy and cool (lettuce) elements. The folks at Craft step it up by curing their own bacon, roasting the tomatoes and blending tarragon into the mayo for this Sunday brunch special. Don’t think they mess with the lettuce, but they do add a couple of fried eggs to the sandwich. Perfect.

7. Serve it with duck eggs
Bacon and eggs, Abacus
Why limit yourself to the basics? Abacus and its celebrity chef, Kent Rathbun, marries Niman Ranch bacon (cured with chipotle for an earthy bite) to scrambled duck eggs. Not much different in taste between one egg and another–we know, but we don’t care. Rathbun takes things a step further by scraping on some truffles.

8. Serve it with eggs
Berkshire bacon & over EZ egg, Neighborhood Services
Yeah, yeah–obvious. At least Nick Badovinus’ restaurant has the guts to serve this breakfast classic at dinnertime.

9. Use it to make stale bread edible
Warm bread salad, DiTerra’s Urban Italian
OK, so they use pancetta here. But they fry it up like good old American strips–and the warm, tart, meaty flavor easily turns a tossing of greens and past its prime bread into one brilliant salad. No way you could get the same results with fish sticks, chicken fingers or sausage patties.

10. Wrap it around something otherwise useless
Baja chicken, Mattito’s

20090828_Michels_BajaChicken_085.jpg

We’re not quite sure what makes this appetizer so Baja. Chicken? Well, you find bland white meat everywhere. Monterey Jack is native to grocery aisles. Maybe it’s the jalapeno. But the point is clear: take three common ingredients and wrap them in bacon, you have a popular item. Same goes for other useless things, such as corn on the cob, tangelos, maybe even Almond Joy.

The Power of Positive Thinking

March 1st, 2009 No comments

Why does someone has a lot of money, and has a very good life, and succeeds in everything that he does, and an other person hasn’t ?

Is this being lucky in your life or unlucky ? The answer is no, the real thing is that in fact everything that happens to you in your life are all things that you attract yourself. You have to know that the most powerful thing in the world is your mind. All what you think of and really believe are things that will happen to you.

Most people think that being rich is not something that is for them, they are destined to be poor and to work hard for their money. If they don’t work hard for it, they will never have anything, that is what they believe. The reality is not like this. The reality is that you are what you think you are, you are what you believe you are.

How many times did it happen that you could not stop thinking about something, and all of a sudden it happened. That’s what I mean by the power of the mind.

Of course only thinking about something is not enough to make something happen, there has to be some action also, but thinking and keep on thinking about something, is already the first step in the good way.

You really can achieve everything in life that you want, the point is just believing in it. The world is filled with unseen treasures, why does one person see them and the other not ? The answer my friends is very simple, the person who sees these treasures puts his mind open to these treasures, he’s ready to receive these treasures. That is the only difference between the two categories. If you really believe that you’re worth it and that you can achieve all the beautiful things in life, then you can have them all, without any doubt. The problem is that there are to many doubts.

You attract everything that you think of, that is called the law of attraction, which means that if you think of something a lot, you send out a powerful signal to the universe of that thought, and remember this the universe is powerful and gives you everything that you want and think.

How to Deal with the Constant Stress from a Battered Economy

March 1st, 2009 No comments

Which comes first – widespread fear or economic chaos?

Companies as varied as Yahoo, American Express, and Time Inc. are laying off employees. Corporate profits are dropping. Job cuts are rampant. The stock market is in a chaotic panic. Housing prices have plunged. Consumer debt is on the rise. The U.S. economy is in a full blown recession, and possibly, a depression.

Money and the economy are at the top of a long list of stressors for Americans as reported in a recent study by Harris Interactive and the American Psychological Association (October, 2008). Eighty percent (80%) of Americans are stressed about the state of the economy.

So how do you manage the unyielding stress that comes with difficult economic times?

Identify Fear, Anxiety and Stress

The first step to overcoming stress is to correctly identify it. When you are afraid, your blood gathers in the large muscle groups such as those in your legs, preparing your body to flee. Your body freezes for a moment to gauge your possible reactions such what is the quickest escape route. The brain sounds the alarm to put your body on alert, making it edgy and ready for action. Accompanying this is an overwhelming flood of anxious, fearful thoughts which seem to be uncontrollable. This intense cycle of fear and worry can paralyze you. It also paralyzes the rational mind, making it difficult to think clearly.

Fear and stress are closely linked. When fear is sparked, the emotional brain begins its dance of anxiety, forcing the brain to focus on the perceived threat. The fearful mind spins in an endless loop of negative thoughts. Fear lies at the heart of all stress.

Stress is Chronic, Low-level Fear

Suicide Among Teenagers: A Serious Problem

March 1st, 2009 No comments

Suicide among teenagers has a dramatic increase in recent years. Each year thousands of teenagers commit suicide in the United States. Suicide is the third most frequent cause of death for young people between 15 and 24 years old, and the sixth leading cause of death for those between 5 and 14 years.

Teenagers experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, and doubt about themselves, pressure to achieve success, financial concerns and fears as they grow. For some teenagers, divorce, the formation of a new family with stepparents and step-siblings, or moving to new communities may disturb and intensify doubts about themselves. These make them feel that suicide is the solution.

Depression and suicidal tendencies are mental disorders and can be treated. We must develop a treatment plan as soon as we recognize and diagnose the presence of these conditions both in children and adolescents. When parents suspect that their child has a serious problem, a psychiatric examination can be helpful.

Suicide and depression has similar symptoms. Parents should be aware of the following signs that may indicate that the teenager is contemplating suicide. The child and adolescent psychiatrists recommend that if child has one or more of these symptoms, parents must talk to their child about his concern and should seek professional help if symptoms persist.

The change in sleeping and eating habits.

Withdrawal from their friends, their family or their usual activities.

Violent actions, rebellious behavior or running away from home.

Use of drugs or alcohol.

Pronounced changes in his personality.

Persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or deterioration in the quality of their school work.

Frequent complaints of physical pain such as headaches, stomach and fatigue, which are usually associated with the emotional state.

Loss of interest in their hobbies and other activities.

Little tolerance for the praise or awards.

The teenager who is contemplating suicide may also:

Complain of being “bad” or feel “rotten inside.”

Mental Illness – What You Should Know

March 1st, 2009 No comments

There are extremes to what people normally find as intelligent. Intelligence involves such primary abilities as understanding the complexities of language, reasoning and being able to perceive space and time relationships. It also includes being able to carry out functions dealing with numbers and with solving practical problems. Intelligence is in a very practical way, what the intelligence test measures.

Many descriptions have been used to depict persons with low intelligence scores. The classifications speak of mild, moderate, severe and profound mental retardation. Though these classifications are useful to measure one’s intelligence or mental retardation, the data should not cast a shadow on the individual.

The mildly retarded ranges between 8-12 years of mental age and the moderately retarded, between 6-8 years. The severely retarded has a mental age from about 3-6 years and the profoundly retarded is below 3 years.

At best the profoundly retarded will remain like a three-year-old, all his life. The severely retarded, even as an adult, acts like a child barely able to talk and acquire even simple skill. Those who are moderately or mildly retarded may finish four to six grades of school, be able to read and write and with appropriate training in a compatible environment be able to make a living. Since intelligence tests put much emphasis on verbal factors, one can see why some retarded people may appear more retarded than they really are.

There are a few basic causes of retardation. It may be caused by inherited deficiencies. Or it may result from birth injuries or from failures in brain development associated with a toxic condition of the mother during pregnancy. Malfunctions of the endocrine system may cause deficiencies. It can also be caused due to chromosome abnormalities.

Studies have shown no direct evidence to demonstrate that a retarded person can deliberately raise his intelligence score, though some often improve their grades with time and training.

Why Good Vibrations Create a Better World

March 1st, 2009 No comments

In his book ‘Power vs Force’, David Hawkins calibrates people’s emotions from levels 20 up to 1000. 20 being Shame which is perilously proximate to death. It’s destructive to emotional and psychological health, and makes us prone to physical illness.

At the other end of the scale at 700- 1000 is enlightenment. This is the level of the Great Ones such as Krishna, Buddha and Jesus. It is the peak of the evolutionary consciousness in the human realm.

All levels (which could be classed as vibration levels) below 200 are said to be energy draining, and below integrity. These vary from Guilt (30), Grief (75), Fear (100) up to Pride (175).

People feel positive as they reach Pride level. However Pride feels good only in contrast to the lower levels. Pride is defensive and vulnerable because it’s dependent upon external conditions, without which is can suddenly revert to a lower level.

At the 200 level, power first appears. Courage (200) is the zone of exploration, accomplishment, fortitude, and determination. People at this level put back into the world as much energy as they take; at the lower levels, populations as well as individuals drain energy from society without reciprocating.

Further levels include willingness (310), Acceptance (350) and Love (500).

This level is characterized by the development of a Love that is unconditional, unchanging, and permanent. It doesn’t fluctuate – its source isn’t dependent on external factors. Loving is a state of being. This is the level of true happiness.

Interesting facts from the book -

* The concept and theories behind these experiments were conducted over a 20 year period using a variety of Kinesiology tests and examinations.

* Kinesiology has an almost certain 100% accuracy reading every time. It will always reveal Yes, No, True, and False answers.

* Collective Consciousness: These experiments reveal that there is a higher power that connects everything and everyone.

* Everything calibrates at certain levels from weak to high including books, food, water, clothes, people, animals, buildings, cars, movies, sports, music etc.

Psychology: How We Process Information

March 1st, 2009 No comments

To think about memory, we first need a model of how it works. I like to think of memory like you might think of creating a book. If you’re creating a textbook, you may start out with hundreds of thousands of articles, most of which you’re going to discard, of course, while you’re actually creating the content of the book. However, the rest of the articles are set aside and stored for later, long-term use. Later, these articles can be withdrawn and used to create the textbook, create theories, and do whatever else you might do with articles while creating a book.

In some ways our memory is like a computer’s information-processing system. By this I mean that our brain basically works in three steps. Our brain must first have the knowledge, or get it there. This could be called encoding in relation to the computer. Also, we’re going to need to retain it, or store the knowledge. We’re also going to be able to get this information back out later, retrieval. Consider the ways a computer encodes, stores, and retrieves information. The computer must first take the input of you pressing the keys on the keyboard, moving the mouse, etc. and translate it into an electronic language. The brain works in the same sense, when it comes to sensory language being converted to neural language and then sent to the brain. The computer can store vast amounts of information on its disk, where it can later be retrieved.

Like any analogy I could possibly give, the computer obviously has its limits. Obviously, you can understand that our memories are a bit less literal and more “fragile”, if you will, in comparison to a computer’s, which is pretty much “set in stone”. Computers are able to process information extremely fast, but are easily able to alternate and perform many tasks at once. The brain is slower, but can do many things at once, in a parallel-like circuit.

There are many different information-processing theories out there to date. Psychologists have proposed these basied on various experiments and hard research.
