Flaming

A player who joined my table is bad-mouthing me…any suggestions for dealing with this? She has a healthy rating, so maybe it's just a strategy for getting her opponents to resign (a forced loss). I'm ahead in the game, but past the fourth play…so cannot delete. I like playing, and like to enjoy other players that play! This is no fun!

How rude. Could it be teasing trash talk kind of thing; some folks think that's funny but really shouldn't unless they know you and that you'd take it as a joke. Normally, I'd say put your spell check thingy up and ignore the chat, but if it's a group game you'd have to ignore the others too. Uh, is she bad-mouthing the other players. May I suggest a simple "back off, lady; I just want to play."

That's what I did….. told the guy to back off. I played the game and beat him ……… sweet revenge.

Keep on with the game………….. beat them and never play them again. Good Luck.

Is her name Angela?

hi……. how are you?…….. we conversed a bit last night.

Hey there Te – totally off topic – but did you see that the kiwis won the HK rugby 7s :-)

Yes its been a while since we won I think.

8 years I believe – but I think you have won it 8 or 9 times in total

It was as ever a drunken and debauched tournament: beer, semi naked women, streakers, pie, men, guys dressed as nurses/ animals/ aliens / you name it.

Oh yeah, and some rugby!

Ha ha ha sorry Lynne, but your message reminds me of the messages I got on internet dating sites before I met Rex Lovelorn…

Hi…how are you?…you sound really nice…

Hi…how r u? Did NE1 eva tell u have a beautiful smile?

Hi…how are you? Wanna exchange pics?

Hi…how r you? I dont like typing so here is my phone number give me a call sometime…

Oh Lord………………….…. Happily married heterosexual…….. I thin I do come across funny to a lot of people. lol

You're not smiling btw………………, you do sound really nice……….., I can see your pic and I don't want your phone number cos it's too expensive to call from here. lol and goodnight.

I have heard some real horror stories on here from people who have joined a table. I have never experienced anything remotely crude or rude yet. I was accused of cheating once. Quite funny actually, since I had only played a few games and was not very good with strategy at all. He had a high rating and played very well when I got a bingo near the end and beat him. His ego was shattered I suppose so he remarked that I made excellent use of a word builder. I responded with, "I am sorry you took the loss so badly".

The person goes by "Carole L" from Toronto, Ontario. Thank goodness I love Canada and play with lots of Canadians, so her behavior won't reflect on her location! You do wonder what's eating somebody like that, though. By the way, she's continuing to call me an idiot for even challenging her right to use messaging for flaming…

One person's behaviour should never reflect on a country. Every village has its idiot. :)

And a village in Texas is missing its idiot right now.

I wonder if it's Carole La? I had exactly the same experience as you of being accused of cheating followed by endless torrents of vile abuse. It was one of my early games so it was quite a shock.

The only good thing was that it was a bit of an education for me. Perhaps I've led a sheltered life but I had never realised that a woman could swear that well (or that badly depending on how you want to see it)!

I would definitely advise everyone to avoid this person at all costs.

Unless of course you're turned on by being verbally flagellated and abused.

You know it could all just be gamesmanship… a way of distracting you whilst they play… and is a legitimate strategy if you are playing to win I guess…

It is difficult to combat admittedly but the only way I know is by not raising to their bait…

Having said that… I like Peggy's response above…lol

If a legitimate strategy includes having to abuse your opponent, because they are beating you, in an effort to put them off, I would rather be a bastard.

I know it affected me when I was first accused on here… and sure enough I lost the game… not the best way to win but some people will think of winning at all costs….

It made me more hardened to it – and now I am able to ignore it.

It is always bound to be that way online… this being the last refuge of the anonymous – I would be extremely surprised if people tried that level of abuse in person… after all I have never heard of Scrabble induced rage in real life….

I'm not so sure, I have flipped a few boards over in my day lol.

There was a guy in a tournament once who after losing his first four games preceded to walk out on the rest of the tournament….

That is the closest I have ever seen to rage ever… lol

The security of hiding behind a computer screen does bring out the worst (and best) in some people, which is probably why it happens much more often online.

I am surprised no one has mentioned that there is one good thing about FLAMING…

It takes an O….

Yes, John…her profile says "Carole La"
I am continuing to play (and am ahead so far)…she is continuing to insult me. If this was a restaurant I could have her thrown out…
I wish the Scrabulous game had a public site where other players would know her potential before the 4th play & could delete. If she wants to win this badly she's probably using help on her words to boot…some game!

and who might that be?

Post the link…

LOL I'm guessing that she meant "President Bush"

Ahh, yes, the poster boy.

thanks Nick – well spotted (that's you not the flamingo)

I'll tell you what happened to me. I didn't react to her aggressive rudeness at all. I just continued chatting politely as if nothing was happening. This seemed to drive her nuts! About half way through the game I was leading by 250. At this point she seemed to stop playing. Then after six days – just before the game became inactive – she played one move and stopped again. This carried on for a while until either she forgot to do her move or gave up this childish tactic and I was able to force a win.

Good luck! After my encounter I started a list of people I wanted to avoid in future, but she is the only one in it.

also, just for the record, i've played 800 games and had only one foul-mouthed opponent – no probs – i just deleted!
