Does Instrument = Personality?
Have you ever noticed that certain instruments attract certain personality types? Tell me about your instrument and your experiences with players of other instruments.
I was a bassoon player until my 2nd semester of college and I always found bassoon players to be generally easy going people who were outside of “main stream” points of view. Also, creativity was high among the bassoon players i’ve met. This goes for girls and guys alike.
I’ve dated two trumpet players in my time and I find that girl trumpet players tend to be real “go getters” with above average intelligence who are not at all like the submissive female stereotype.
I’ve found that brass players in general can often be found propping up the nearest bar! When I was younger this was something I noticed (as I play cornet) about the adult player I knew. Now I intend to carry on this cherished tradition!
Sorry spelling mistake – adult players
woohoo go trumpets
yep pretty much all the trombones at our school are crazy and perverted
all the flutes are arrogant and slightly self-absorbed, i can say this because i play flute and pic.
the trumpets believe they are always right.
the mellos/ horns are really quiet…most of the time, our band believes they are plotting something…but what?
the tubas are just plain obnoxious and they complain about how boring their music is.
the saxs hate every woodwind and believe they should rule the world, but they rarely say that out loud
and who cares about the clarinets?
oh, and yes the trombones are perverted, i think that is do to the shape of the instrument but thats just and idea.
The horns are definitely plotting something.
I’m your inside source. I decided to go traitor and tell you all because our plot’s been sunk frequently by incompetent leaders.
Our section, at my school, has been in decline since the “golden age” before my old section leader graduated, but nevertheless, we are plotting something.
Here’s how it is going to go.
As the usual brass superpower that is generally squelched by trumpets who are overblowing, we simply wait for a point where trumpets are weakest, think a 3/4 freshman trumpet section. In conjunction with a seriously theatrical piece where the horn part is really sweet. We seize that chance and play really loud. The director goes stone deaf and we’re free to do as we please. Muahahaha.
Flutes are kind of lame…and extremely girly. Gahhh. They’re so boring.
Oboes are like, somewhat serious people who are more focused on playing their music than the social aspect of band.
Clarinets are kind of crazy.
Bassoons are umm…I don’t even know. Kind of laid back.
Saxes tend to be really cool asians.
French horns are typically somewhat girly girl ish…save for the one guy.
Trombones tend to kind of keep to themselves. And they’re usually asian and/or named john/jon.
Baritones…idk.
Tuba players. We tend to be slightly on the nerdier side….xD. But we’re soooo much cooler than you. =D
Percussionists. Um. Dude, what do I even say about them!?
Drummers are ridiculously obnoxious/loud. You can always hear them comming.
The clarinets are quiet, almost to the point that we forget they exist.
Our one tuba player is just cool; everybody likes him.
The saxes are deviously plotting to take over the band, and we think we’re all that (Go saxies!)
Trumpets are just loud and there, and they almost all slouch.
That’s all I can think of for now.
Wow, this is so true!
At our school, the flutes are all annoying, gossipy girls.
The clarinets barely exist.
The saxophone section (myself included) tries to dominate, even when we don’t have the melody.
The trumpets always think they’re being really quiet, and play as loud as they can.
The low brass section is mostly clueless.
And the percussion section is obnoxious ALL THE TIME.
:D
Flutes are just girly, gossipy, and the section leaders, bitchy.
Clarinents i find stick within their section and dont sociolize much
Trumpets are always too loud, though it is probably a bit hard to keep quiet
Trombones are usually comedians, at least all the ones i know make me laugh.
Tubas are like, just gross and big.
Saxophones are sexy. especially the black saxes.
French horns, well i am the only fh in my band so i wouldnt really know.
Baritones are like tubas.
im probably missing something, so forgive me if i forgot you.
Wow! Melissa in post #6 summed up our whole band :P Apart from the fact that the clarinets are obv. the most important instrument in the band With the exception of the clarinet player sitting next to me who thinks he is God’s gift to the earth and that he can overblow and go completely flat just so he is noticed. God help me on Wednesdays and Fridays xD
The tuba players are men most of the time but at my school there are three girls with me in there and i am the loudest Ba ha ha
I also play trombone are yes and i di have i sick mind
and i play baritone too well there are in between trombone and tube in my school so they are a but a both ba ha ha
Percussionists…we’re some sexy beasts.
Trombones are…lets just say they have a lot of bark, and no bite…if ya know what i mean.
Saxes…go to hell.
Trumpets…second to percussionists.
Tuba…why are there not as many talented tuba players? there’s more to that one.
French Horns…no comment.
Flutes/piccs…….you suck (thats for you Lacey)……
Clarinets…i’m sorry you have to listen to yourself play such a horrible-sounding instrument.
Baritones…you’re sexy Kevin…as for the rest of you…you’ll get whats coming to you.
it also depends on the band size…i’m in a 190 piece band…13 tubas.
I lead our 22 piece percussion section.
we’re big.
you are kidding me, right? I play horn and it is SO not true at my school. First, I am the life of the party. Second, I dont plot. hahahahaha
i play horn too, and everyone loves me:P
yessss thats how it is! errbody loves the horns!
drummers = very hottttt…drumming just makes you hot (if you’re a guy)
i gotta say, horns tend to be competitive and perfectionists.
perucssionsists are lazy.
and whoever said trombones are perverted was right.
haha trumpets DO slouch! you should see ours. their terrible
I play oboe, and have noticed that oboe players seem really quiet and sweet, until you start talking to them and then you realize that they have a whole lot of quirks and rather odd things about them.
I also play sax, and the saxes somewhat seclude themselves from everyone else b/c they feel that they are superior to everyone else and are rather show offy.
Trumpets= obnoxious and think they’re better than they really are
clarinets=off in thier own little world, either quiet or super ambitoius
flutes= girly and gossipy
percussionists= trouble makers. always making noise
Pianists: People who usually think they’re too good to be in an orchestra.
yeah horns don’t plot. and we’re definately not quiet. we’re just the most competitive section.
i’m in a 500 band and there’s pretty much every type of person in every section. but generally:
flutes: too girly and annoying
oboes: quiet w/out their instruments
clarinets: weird…
saxes: WAY to perfectionist and are in LOVE with their instruments
bassoons: laid back
trumpets: are the perfect example of the stereotypical full-of-themselves trumpet section
horn: way, WAY too competitive
trombone: mostly stupid guys
baritones: mostly stupid perverts
tubas: mostly sane but still have their share of perverts
pit: LAZY
drumline: they have their own little world…
usually instrument=personality, but not always. for example, some trumpets were throing a box around. usually, as a clarinet, i would stay away, but about 2 hours earlier, i had drank 32 oz of nasty coffee i didn’t want to throw away cause it cost $3, so i got a coke to kill the taste. on this caffene buzz, the cardboard box was flying, we tried on clothes from the lost and found, and the flutes were hiding in fear. so i guess anyone can be a trumpet with enough caffene
YES instruments do match personality… or is it the other way around?
o and I read someone who wrote that the trombones are perverts… all the brass players are… I wonder why?
Well, there seems to be a lot of eye-openers for me about woodwind/brasswing and percussion personalities! Yet none about strings… So being a cellist, let me expand upon them!
Violins: Extremely anal retentive and uptight. Tend to go a little crazy at the slightest thing.
Violas: Tend to be a little more on the nerdy/weird side (above and beyond the regular musician!)
Celli: Are mellow, easy going and get along with nearly everyone.
Bass: Tend to be quiet and a bit arrogant.
Okay, as I stopped playing with my ochestra quite a time ago to focus on my singing i can only say how i find my instramental freinds.
Flutes: Quiet, a laugh, but very pinickity.
French Horns: Always right, even if thier so wrong the line is a dot to them.
Clarinets: Bossy, can’t be bothered and
Harps: craaaaaaazy
Violins: Are lovely and i want to marry them.
The voice is an instrument so;
Soprano’s: Soppy-sops, lazy as they always the tune. Prima-donna’s. Opinionated.
Mezzo’s: You are the biggest section of the choir and we still can’t hear you. Fair-minded though.
Alto’s: Butch and will sing lounder than anyone else beacuse they can.
ahaha, thank you!
“saxes tend to be really cool asians”
i totally agree! :P
Guitars: either really cool and fun, or boring and blending into the crowd it depends on what kind of music they play and where
Trombones: most of the trombone players in my band are girls and they’re all pretty cool, they’re all pretty tuff chicks i wouldn’t want to fight
Saxaphones: they could take over the world but only because there are so freakin many of them
Trumpets: perverts, i have never heard so many that’s what she said jokes from one place in my life as from the trumpet section
Basoons: pretty awesome, chill people, sometimes ignorant
Flutes: always think they can play something better then you, yet when they play a part that was written for them they can’t play it.
Clarinets: I find they are either th is or the oposite, perfectionists that spend all their free time in the practice room and spend as much money on a single reed as an oboe or basoon player
Oboe: I play this along with alto sax. We are loud people that make fun of their conductor in orchestra and have funny laughs that make eacohther laugh causing a chain reaction throughout the section
