As I Lay Dying-heaviest christian band in the universe, i didnt know christians rocked this hard
Norma Jean-hardcore as crap, some SUBTLE christian undertones
Haste the Day-another super heavy christian band
Underoath-same as AILD and HTD, but not as heavy
Unearth
Drop Dead Gorgeous
From Autumn to Ashes
Zao-the original heavy metal christian band
It seems to me like christians take the cake in reference to the heaviest new progressive metal bands, sorry Satan

children of bodom

children of bodom is pretty sweet except for all the yelling. hehe.

in flames
children of bodom
SOAD
dream theater (not sure to what extent they count as metal, but whatever)

When i think of metal, its all about europe. Strativarius, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody, and Dragonforce are titans of euro metal. That says nothing about the black metal and death metal traditions. And in case anyone wants to know the difference between these two genres, black metal tends to be more straight forward in its riffage with dark melodic structure and song topics typically dealing with underworldly topics from various world cultures. Death metal on the other hand is characterized by lyrics espousing gore, murder, violence, and well, death. But although the lyrics may not seem very interesting or complex (most of the time, there are definetly exceptions to this rule) the music, especially the extremely technical kind, is some of the most trying and complicated music ever made. Extremely fast meter changes, multiple modal variations, and little if any leading tones and phrases make death metal as technically trying for the musician as any classical or jazz piece (especially the metal drummers…seriously wtfuck). Dont bash this stuff till you truely try it. Black metal bands include: Immortal, Emperor, Ulver, Naglfar, Satyricon, Mayhem, etc.
Death metal bands include: Morbid Angel, Death Angel, Death, Deicide,Cannibal Corpse, etc.

I dont know why i took the time to write this…no one really asked me to. Oh well, its there. Whatev.

Skillet would have to be my favorite. I love playing their music. Just wish I had an amp for my violin.

SOAD, Christian?

SOAD is neither Christian nor metal.

Zao, Norma Jean, Chiodos, and several other bands I've seen are hardcore, which is actually a genre of punk.

I'm not saying that to detract from the quality of any of those bands, but I figured I'd set the record straight. :)

But enough genre nitpicking: my favorite metal bands include Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Opeth, Blind Guardian, Tiamat, Therion, Summoning, Agalloch, Thergothon, and too many others to list.

Finally someone said Blind Guardian!
My other favorites are Iron Maiden, Wintersun, Children of Bodom, and Lamb of God.

I'd have to say Arch Enemy, Pantera, Lamb of God, and Trivium.

If there was a mix. I'd have to say there are way to many metal bands out there for just a couple favorites. Also it branches out into Posthardcore, Hardcore, etc.etc. but I'd have to say
Best Up coming Australian (yup)- Parkway Drive
American-too many. Pantera, BTBAM, FASSW, All shall perish, at all cost, atreyu.
i'm going to stop before i insult someone by accident

you guys gots to check out Psyclon Nine. They're amazing. End of story…

Vaguely in order from heaviest to not heaviest:

Killswitch Engage
Shadows Fall
Unearth
All That Remains
As I Lay Dying
Trivium
Sevendust
Disturbed
Dream Theater (DT is Progressive Metal, and therefore metal)
Black Label Society
Iron Maiden
Dragonforce
