South African Artists
there are so many threads for other countries so i decided to add my own….
so for the South Afrcians here who is your fave SA artist?
personally I love chris Chameleon, not metal, he is barely rock (hasn't even finished his second English album yet) but i still love his work, (English only i don't speak a word of Afrikaans, i've only lived here a few years) but going heavier I would probably have to go with the Nudies…. but i love Parlotones, Prime circle, Harris Tweed and the likes, funny enough one band i could never get into was Seether funny as they are probably the biggest export musically.
only South African artists I know is Dave Matthews. But he hardly counts because he left as a toddler. He did serve in their military though so I guess that counts for something.
Howzit Jake
Seether are South African (Originally called Saron Gas)
Just Jinger are also from SA (Art Matthews the singer actually from my hubby's town) they've been in USA for a decade or more now though, Love their stuff.
Wonderboom, lot of success over seas, but the guitarist is a bit of a doos but some of their stuff is okay.
Howzit Jess,
I know of Taxi Violence heard a couple of songs. I almost forgot,
Henry Ate
The guitarist (and male singeR) is in another band now called Colourburst, the other Guitarist, Firk is a work collegue of my hubby, so i get all their latest demo's. trhey are pretty good if you feel like the mellow accoustic stuff. (check out www.myspace.com/douglasbea
Jess you don't perhaps know the song that Mnet are playing on the Prison Break advert do you?
I need to get hold of that song.
Oh just though of another band i like Falling Short.
Oh and Jake you may have heard of the Narrow (Sunday morning) they are also from SA they do a great version of Aha's Living Daylight, you must check it out!
Nah i'm up in Jozi.
Did you go to the Cokefest last year? OMG was Arno C hot or what?
Dave (My Hubby doesn't like Cito much, he knew him when Wonderboom were just starting out (and playing at Roxy's) way back when.
We ended up staying at the same guest house as him and some other guys in Colesburg when we were travelling down to Plett last month, I think they were less impressed with Colesburg than we were…… :o)
I got it – it was on Mnets website. and they are local :o)
For those of you who've been enquiring about the song used in the prison break promotional ads, the song used in the advertisment is by local rockers Knave.
The Song is called Taunt and Tether, and it hails from their debut album Polarity.
give me some good South African bands for me to look up I need some new music
not really, i've only lived here for a handful of years.
going back to the Coke Fest, we went last year, dragged my hubby along (he hates Evanescence but they are one of my fave bands so couldn't miss it) oh and did i mention Arno Carsten was hot? :o)
we got there just as Cassette were finishing (just in time for Kahn and the boys of Paroltones) Nudies were awesome but the sound was terrbile so Arno sounded like he was screaming, but he was hot :o) oh i've mentioned that already. Stained were boring, he sat on a bloody chair the whole time, most exciting thing with them was when he brough Amy Lee out for a duet, 3 Doors down were pretty boring too, but Hoobastank put up a helluva show.
Yeah when i heard they were going i decided not to go
i've never been able to get into them.
now if Within Temptation, Lacuna coil or Stratovarius were to go, i'd be there :o)
Try the Narrow,
I personally love the Spring Bok Nude Girls but thery are not to every ones taste.
for the more radio friendly rock, Prime circle are an awesome speciimen Parlotones are making big waves at the moment too, they have a very The Smiths sound to them, and Khan (the singer has a unique voice)
I'll look them up thanks : )
Ed -
look out for anew South African band (I just discovered them myself) they are called Knave
what genre are they?
Johnny Clegg (well he's from England but he does African music). Listen to Scatterlings of Africa (good song)
I'm not a fan of Seether at all. Too bland for me. I'm open to some suggestions though, I am always looking for new music to check out. Any suggestions?
Yeah, i'm a fan of Seether, The Narrow, Wickhead, Springbok Nude Girls and Prime Circle. I use to listen to Tuks all the time. And yeah Polisiekar never really appealed to me. Occasionally when I'm dazed, I'll pull out some Leuloop… It's practically impossible to get ahold of any of this stuff outside of SA which sucks for me.
Where do you live now?
i never really liked foPK either, (but that's perhaps cuz they sing mainly in Afrikaans) I'm a radion 2000 gal, love Ray and Nicole in the morning, although they can play some utter crap at times, but then anything is better than the rude awaking on hiveld
Meh. Now it's all thailand for me. The music here is pretty bad… to say the least. so i have to download all this other stuff to keep me satisfied.
