Eldest Sibling Rule
Can I add this one, as I have been trying to convince my younger sister of this for 24 years:-
As the eldest sibling, and therefore the one on whom your parents made all of their mistakes, you are automatically entitled to shotgun, when driving with one parent, and any younger siblings.
rubbish
i agree, i am normally in thte front, being the eldest, but my sister hasn't quite grasped the whole shotgun thing because she is small, so she demands to go in the front and i let her just to shut her up
I'd say that the standard shotgun rules should apply in this scenario, sorry.
I think the eldest sibling rule is unfair, and the fact one would assert that there should be such a rule is testimony as to why we NEED the shotgun arrangement. Automatic shotgun is something very very rare.
An even more logical argument would be "Tallest Sibling Rule" or "Longest Legged Sibling Rule" and because none is a perfect solution, I agree that they are all rubbish.
I think its Gay. Im the Youngest in the Family and Im the Only guy in the Family. So I think the Man should get Shotgun before his Sisters.
No way. There shouldn't be to many loopholes around having to yell the word. Pirate rule! thats the only exception.
It would suck if shotgun always were to be decided by rules, not the one that cals it first.
HOWVEER! the whole reason for this rule is driving laws that say kids have 2 be a certian age/weight to sit in the front. So the eldest gets the front FIRST. Then the next oldest sibling gets the front after the eldest has left for college or gets their own car. After which if riding in the family car again, then considering they have had a long time to be in the front, they will take the back. In the case of twins, it is the twin that came out first, and so on for children of multiple births. And with the weight issue sonce driving lawas vary from state to state, if the younger sibling is heavy enough or bigger than the older sibling, they can have the front cause lets face it , do you really want to be squished in the back with them?
How about this:
When selecting shotgun among siblings, and only siblings, if the elder or eldest sibling is AT LEAST 50% older than (i.e. 1.5 times as old as) the next younger sibling, he/she has the right to shotgun. Any siblings less than 33% younger than the eldest sibling may vie for shotgun according to the set rules of shotgun.
If non-sibling(s) are present, and these siblings are friends of a younger sibling who is at least 33% younger than (i.e. 2/3rds as old as) the eldest (riding) sibling, the eldest riding sibling may override shotgun. If the non-sibling(s) are not friends of any particular sibling, then all sibling rules are null and void.
Otherwise, all shotgun rules are valid and applicable.
Example: Two siblings, 16 and 10, are riding the same car. The elder sibling can, at his/her discretion, override shotgun. However, if a non-sibling, who is not accompanying the younger sibling and is also 10, were also riding, then shotgun rules may be applied.
It's a little long in description, but makes practical sense, in my opinion.
Wow thats a convoluted way of going about it, thats not what shotgun is about, its simple its to the point, and more importantly the general overiding principle of shotgun is awesomeness, its like its constitution, and having such a long winded rule is against that. booo.
i totally agree i have a brother and sisters my age, but technically i'm the oldest so i should get the front seat, yet my brother always seems to get it….EVEN when i yell "shotgun"
Yeah standard shotgun rules. Or failing that, parental authority. My folks always used to let me have the front seat on the way out, and my sis got it on the way back.
eldest sibling rule sucks arse… its as valid as the tallest person rule.
Being the eldest, I say this rule is unfair. Standard rules apply.
I agree with you. But having only brothers, its no problem to get them to listen. I just tell them: I'm in the front. End of argument!
there's a warning against children under 12 riding in shotgun.
older siblings should always get shotgun before younger ones, because everyone hates it when your younger sibling beats you at anything and then they smile back at you with this smug little look on their face.
or how about this:
anyone has a right to shotgun as long as they are over the age of 12, but if a younger sibling gets shotgun and rubs it in, they have to walk, or go in the trunk. or possibly just get punched in the face.
ALL people (younger / older sibling, male, female, whatever) have the right to call shotgun UNLESS they under the age / specified weight that is specified by the car for being able to safely ride in the car (I believe the age is 12, and the weight is 60 pounds – correct me if I am wrong).
And Anne, rubbing in that you got shotgun is one of the pluses of receiving it. Next time, call it first.
Standard Shotgun rules, shotgun does not recognise age.
well clearly the first twin out knows how shotgun works, cos i mean they called it first once before to get out of the womb first, now didn't they
me and my brother argue about this a lot……so we just follow standard shotgun rules
I think the eldest sibling rule is a terrible rule
The eldest sibling should know full well the rules of shotgun, and if a youger sibling does in fact call it first then sucks to be older.
I, as the youngest of four always got back seat untill the founding of shotgun.
Shotgun saved me!
I have to agree with this rule. For awhile my little bro and I alternated, but for the past 6 years or so, it's just a given that I get the front seat when I'm home.
bollocks to that
im 17 and my older brother (19) trys to use this "rule" all the time. i think that as soon as the younger child gets to the legal age to sit in the front they should have automatic shotgun because :
1). the older child will probably get their own car before the younger one so they can sit in the front all the time in their own car while driving.
2). i always wanted to sit in the front when i was little but my brother used to sit there cos he was older and my dad used to always tell me "you can sit in the front when your older" , not considering the fact that i may have aged but so has my brother so hes still the eldest so he still used to get shotgun …now im old enough for the "age rule " to not apply so i just try to run to the car first and refuse to move from the seat lol cos my brother adheres to the age rule more than the shotgun rule…bastard lol
oh and the tallest person rule is bollocks too cos my brother also uses this "rule" saying that hes cramped sitting in the back BUT when i sit in the back im cramped (even though im only 5"2) and i sit with my legs normal wheras even though my brothers taller he sits like normal guys do with their legs apart and therefore he isnt as cramped cos he hasnt got the the front chair digging into his knees like me
I agree, I have always had to give up the front seat to my elder sis, and the only time my younger sister has the front seat instead of me, is when we picked her up from hospital after surgery, and even then she was lucky to get it! lol
x
I dont think the oldest should always necessarily get the front seat just because they are older. What if you have twins and one twin is only older by a few minutes that hardly makes them older. . .that doesnt seem fair. Since i was the youngest of four i was the favorite spoiled one so i always got shot gun.
Utter crap. As stated above, shotgun exists in order to prevent reason based arguments on who gets the front seat. My younger brother often tries the "I'm tall" argument, and then I use the "I'm older" argument. It's clearly not a productive use of time. Shotgun is fast and effective, and shows who truely wants it the most (which is the best reason of all).
Also, as the older sibling should be more cognitively developed (at least until the point where you're all adults anyway) they should be able to call shotgun faster every time. If they can't, then to be honest I don't think they deserve to have any special treatment.
SILLY. I'm the older and My bro is near a foot taller than I am. We use shotgun or diplomacy. Giving either of us the seat automatically is just silly. Although fi you really want to always be in the front, just carry an eyepatch and a stuffed parrot.
i think this rule is rubbish! shotgun is the only fair way to chose the shotgunner!
although could someone tell my brother this as im older, and i always call shotgun first cos im cleverer and i run to the car first cos im faster but he just comes up and pulls me out and gets the front seat cos hes bigger and stronger! wheres the fairness in that?!?!
xx
